At the beginning of 2008, the Youth Empowerment Programme was launched. This is in response to the need for pupils who passed Grade 9 at the Trust school and who did not have the academic abilitiy to continue through to matric, to acquire an accredited skill which will equip them for employment.

The Trust established a training school in the town of Colesberg, where each year a group of students begins their year of training to enable them to work in the hospitality industry. On completion of their course, they receive a Diploma from City-and-Guilds, London. This year 12 students are training at the Hospitality School.

Students who wish to learn a trade are initially placed in learnership situations in Colesberg (plumbing, building and electrics) to choose which interests them most. They are then sent to Unique Training Solutions in Bloemfontein for training during the year.

In this way, young girls and boys, who in the past might have “fallen through the cracks”, will have the opportunity of acquiring training in a trade. To date, all students from previous years are gainfully employed – three of them are employed at De Stijl Hotel at the Gariep Dam, a 4 star establishment.
